I’ve had a lot of women reaching out saying that they have self-diagnosed with this condition for many years.

The reality of this is that lots of women have been struggling with extreme mood changes, often combined with very heavy periods and/or period pain for up to 2 weeks out of every 4.

That is half of the time, spent feeling incredibly strong emotions that they are either trying to suppress or is coming out, most often around the people they love the most.

Most women report that they have been offered antidepressants but they haven’t worked for them.

What they haven’t been offered is someone to support them on a regular basis so that they have a plan tailored to them. With weekly acupuncture to help bring the body back into balance. It is a space to vent and then deeply relax so you can leave feeling renewed.

They probably also haven’t been offered an in depth look at their health, diet, lifestyle and discussed a manageable plan of small steps that will work for them. And if any of the steps don’t work for them, we adjust the plan so it does work as we meet each week.

A lot of women experience symptoms every month that impact their ability to function.

For some, they will get through work but their relationships will suffer.

For others, they will find it difficult to manage their work when their moods are so much more up and down between ovulation and their period.

There is more awareness around this and people are seeing that it is not “just” PMS and may actually be PMDD.

The difficulty is that your GP is likely to only be able to suggest antidepressants or hormones.

Sometimes there are some lovely simple lifestyle changes that can make a huge impact.

Clients also sometimes want support with how to approach this with their GP to get a diagnosis.

When working with me, we also incorporate dietary changes and supplements where necessary.

Acupuncture works on PMDD by regulating the Liver Qi (pronounced chee). There may also be other things contributing to this but it will be different for everyone, so it is important to see a specialist who will aim to work out the root cause and support you to minimise these symptoms.

I had a great start to the week with an exercise class this morning.

I had got to a point where I wasn’t enjoying exercise and whilst chatting with a friend, I realised that what makes the difference is exercising with other people in a friendly environment.

I know quite a lot of people working with women’s health around Bristol now and @pollyturnill_pt sprung to mind.

Small classes, strength based and friendly.

So I sent Polly a message and I got started last week.

It was hard work but fun and a great way to start the week!

This is what I do with clients, I find out where there are little gaps and we make a plan that will work for them. No two people are doing the same things. There is of course a theme and I will recommend people who I know are good, but only if it is the right thing for them.

One of my favourite hormone friendly activities is going for a walk in nature with a friend. I took the opportunity this bank holiday weekend to go to the Brecon Beacons with my husband for some quality time, lots of steps and even a dip in the stream next to one of the calmer waterfalls.

My cup was so full after that wonderful day out. And yet it was such a simple easy thing to do. Balancing your hormones and re-energising yourself doesn’t have to be complicated. Part of it can be making sure you are making enough time for the things you love.

Some lovely words from a couple who have just completed their work with me. We found a problem through testing for a microbiome imbalance based on symptoms and other previous test results.

It often takes 3 months after treatment for eggs and sperm to become optimal and it was about 3 months after treatment for microbiome issues that they came in to tell me they were pregnant.

That is of course only the first hurdle to overcome. Due to a previous miscarriage this was a difficult time. Early pregnancy symptoms were different this time and they had done made some changes so this was a different pregnancy.

I am so pleased that they have made it beyond the first trimester and are now able to enjoy the rest of their pregnancy, whilst knowing they can reach out if they do need anything.

Well this lovely feedback brought tears to my eyes!

I don’t think there is any more to say other than it has been a massive pleasure to work with this couple.

She is now 19 weeks pregnant and is starting to feel little movements during the evenings and I am enjoying continuing to support her on this journey.
