Why work with a Fertility Coach and Acupuncturist?

People often hear about acupuncture being good for fertility. Sometimes when going for IVF, the nurse may suggest finding an acupuncturist to provide treatment around the transfer. But most people don’t know how to find a good acupuncturist or what the difference is between one person and the next.

Here are some of my skills:

I do an annual review of my clients which helps me to see what qualities and conditions lead to more successful outcomes. This review means that I can better support women and couples to optimise their chances of success.

In 2023, these were the conditions and qualities that lead to pregnancy:

✔️time to spend at least 3 months preparing before any planned IVF,
✔️driven to understand the reason for their fertility journey and prepared to spend money on testing,
✔️willing to make small changes to their diet and/or lifestyle and happy to discuss struggles so we could find a strategy that works for them,
✔️for the couples, a supportive male partner who was willing to investigate their fertility with a sperm DNA fragmentation test,
✔️for couples, a partner who was willing to take supplements regularly and antibiotics or other recommended treatments where necessary.

Everyone who I worked with in 2023 who met the above conditions, either fell pregnant or is still working with me now. Those that are still working with me now are complex cases and we are working through everything, together.

One of the main parts of what I practice is acupuncture.

I love testing and seeing the reasons behind why someone has been told they have “unexplained infertility” but I also love supporting people using my very fine needles.

Some people are worried about what it will feel like. It is true, you will feel something. But it is nothing like an injection as acupuncture needles are so fine that you can fit 20 into a hypodermic needle and they are finer than a hair.

Needles for men and women, tend to go in the legs around the knees and lower, in the abdomen, in the hands, wrists and arms, and in the head and ears. I tend to use 10-16 needles per treatment.

I have a lot of people coming to me asking about support for male fertility, as a fertility assessment has shown up that there are male factor issues and they have been told that the answer is IVF.

First of all, men are often shocked to hear this as there aren’t any obvious signs that something might be wrong.

Secondly, they want to know what the problem is and whether it can be fixed, rather than bypassed, using IVF.

The first thing I want to say is that these men are absolutely right to want choices and to find out what is going on in their body. By finding the problem, and fixing it, they will be supported for not just the imminent pregnancy they so badly want, but for future pregnancies and growing the family they always had in mind.

Female fertility testing is a lot easier to access locally around Bristol and in general in the UK.

Blood tests can be done using home testing kits (I like @medichecks hormone and thyroid tests).

Microbiome testing is done by receiving a kit in the post and sending it off in the post.

Scans are available locally but the best scans are in London.

Reproductive Immunology testing is available in Central London and Croydon (with parking) and the follow up takes place over zoom.

So there are lots of things that can be done without needing to travel, but for some cases, it might be worth making a trip to London to tick some of the extra boxes.

I feel that having access to all of this is a great next step and often uncovers the reasons for female unexplained infertility.

When you are on a fertility journey, you may be offered a semen analysis which gives sperm count, motility, percentage of normal forms/morphology, and pH if you are lucky. This gives some basic information about how your sperm looks on the outside but not what is going on in the inside.

Whether your results are within the normal range or not, it is generally useful to dig a bit deeper, just to check what is going on.

If everything is in the normal range, I recommend adding a sperm DNA fragmentation test to check that sperm is as healthy on the inside as it looks on the outside.

If some of your results are outside of the normal range, I may also recommend some of the other testing listed in the image above to rule out other issues and enable us to address any problems that do show up.
