PCOS is something close to my heart as I think this is something that contributed to my longer fertility journey.

Often, women find that they put on weight easily and are very sensitive to sugar. So supporting balanced sugar levels with adding certain foods and supplements can be a game changing first step.

Acupuncture has been shown to regulate hormone levels that can be out of balance in women with PCOS. I see patients ovulating more frequently when they are having regular acupuncture and cycles becoming a much more normal length. When your cycles length reduces from 35+ days, your opportunities to conceive are increased as you are ovulating more frequently.

In addition, it is always important to make sure male fertility is optimal so you have the best possible chance of conceiving. That may be reviewing existing test results to check the are optimal or it may be recommending some additional testing (such as a COMET Sperm DNA Fragmentation test).

When you already have a child (or children) but are struggling to conceive your next, you may be experiencing secondary infertility.

This can feel like a big time pressure when you have in mind a certain age gap between your children, or maybe you just feel that you are older this time round.

Whether your first child was conceived easily or through multiple rounds of IVF, the next journey to pregnancy can be very different.

Hormone profiles can change, either due to breastfeeding or just by being older and heading into those very early stages of perimenopause.

Your lifestyle may have changed significantly so you may feel more tired, stressed or anxious due to the balance of new responsibilities.

Did you know that eggs and sperm take around 3 months to mature and be released?

This means that I see the big changes often happening 3 months after you have started to implement the simple changes I recommend.

Sometimes it takes a little longer and sometimes testing is helpful to pinpoint the main issue for you. But for a lot of people, month 4 is when the magic happens. ✨

I hear from couples who have been for a “Fertility Assessment” at an IVF clinic very often.

The advice almost always seems to be have IVF or ICSI as soon as possible.

Sometimes during these consultations, the man has been told that his sperm is suboptimal so it is unlikely they will fall pregnant naturally and that they should try IVF with ICSI (where a sperm is selected from the sample and injected into the egg).

What these men are not told, that they want to know, is why has this happened and what can he do about it.

You know something is wrong. It could be that you are getting up multiple times in the night during your period because it is so heavy, or your mood feels out of control for 1-2 weeks before your period, or your partner’s semen analysis results are outside of the normal range.

But the answer given by your Consultant is to try another medication, have a hysterectomy, take antidepressants or just use ICSI.

You trust your consultant to have your best interests at heart but you think there must be another way.

Then you find me and realise there may be another option.

Just as the doctors can’t guarantee the outcome you want, neither can I.
